What Has Kanyathon Been Until 2017
Since its inception in 2011, every run has been pleasantly challenging and equally successful in terms of participation and donation. The first year saw 400 participants running for the noble cause and the occasion was graced by the Bengaluru FC football team, owned by the JSW group and led by Mr. Ashley Westwood, head coach and ex-Manchester United footballer. Among the other guests of honour were prominent names like Mrs. Radha Murthy, Vice President of the Indian Hockey Federation and Karnataka State Hockey Federation, Brigadier Naidu and Mr. Babu S., Bengaluru Police Department.
The following years witnessed an increase in participation from 800 runners in 2013 to 4000+ dedicated sprinters in 2017, raising the bar to unmatchable heights. Having guests of honour like Rajiv Gowda—eminent member of parliament and academician and Akshara Hassan—Indian film actress, only goes to show the immense popularity of the event and the inviolable belief that people have on the cause of saving the girl child. There is an urgent need to change the cliched mindset of the patriarchal society which thinks of girls as a liability and Kanyathon works to make this transformation possible. It will be true to say that Kanyathon has encouraged exuberant participation from all verticals of life, ranging from students to working professionals.
But even as we cherish the success of Kanyathon over the years, we believe that it is the cause that has succeeded more than anything else, and that is what keeps us going.
